Health wellness

     Good health is of great significance to everyone in society. Since increasing the extent of a healthy life is the major health goal, the topic has served to enlighten on the fact that wellness is the affirmative part of anyone’s optimal health. This is because, currently, many of the illnesses, if not all, are preventable or manageable while in many instances reversible with little effort. However, most youths and high numbers of adults are faced with diseases such as chronic diseases, depression, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart diseases due to their lack of appreciation towards fitness and its significance.

    Although used interchangeably, health and wellness have slightly differing meanings. Health is a term mainly associated with the medical world that describes the mental and physical state of an individual. Health usually denotes the absence of abnormality or disease. On the other hand, wellness is the overall procedure of maintaining the common state of good health. Wellness includes conscious decisions made by individuals while health basically describes an individual’s condition. However, the two terms are combined to express the pursuit of general mental, physical, emotional, and physical health. The term is frequently used in a variety of perspectives, aimed at upholding better lifestyles.

    Health and wellness are in nature are multidimensional. The dimensions surrounding wellness and health include the intellectual, emotional (mental), spiritual, social, and physical. Other models such as the interdependent model developed by Dr. Bill Hettler suggest an occupational dimension as part of a six model dimension of health and wellness. The social dimension incites contributing to an individual’s community and environment that is emphasizing on the interdependence between nature and others. The spiritual dimension acknowledges humanity’s search for the definition of purpose and meaning in the existence of humans. It involves the development of deep indebtedness for the expanse and depth of the natural forces existing in the universe and of life.

    The physical dimension acknowledges the necessity for consistent physical activity. It encourages the development of learning about nutrition and diet while discouraging drugs and substance abuse. Intellectual dimension appreciates the creativeness of an individual while stimulating the mental activities. On the other hand, emotional dimension recognizes the acceptance and awareness of an individual’s feelings. It involves the extent to which a person feels enthusiastic and positive about life and oneself. Occupational dimension focuses on personal enrichment and satisfaction in one’s life via work.

    Health and wellness in persons are influenced by a variety of factors. The factors include sex, age, gender, genetics, community and social influences, working and living conditions, general environmental and social conditions, and a person’s lifestyle factors.

    Health and wellness have very great value to our lives too . It reduces the menace of premature death by influencing better life quality in active people. It also reduces the risks of inactivity related diseases such as the cardiovascular disease. It also helps in increasing core strength, coordination, balance, agility, self- esteem and body image. Health and wellness can only be maintained by an individual’s effort, especially using physical exercise as a control or inducer of health and wellness. Consistency, proper scheduling of physical activities, appropriate exercises, and proper diet are the key factors for the maintenance of health and wellness.

    In the discussion of health and wellness, its dimensions, the factors influencing it, its value and ways to attain it, it is clear that physical activity stands out as the major contributor of individuals’ health and wellness. It is also notable that wellness and health are influenced by sex, gender, genetics, and individual’s lifestyle, and age, social and environmental factors other than physical activity. Therefore, in maintaining health and wellness, it’s important to acknowledge the various dimensions surrounding them and the factors that influence its being. 

    These major points discuss the importance of health and wellness as they are all interrelated such that the exclusion of one of the points nullifies the others by compromising their success. They also show the importance of fitness to health and fitness.
